We can't stop an earthquake, but we can do things to make sure that earthquakes don't destroy whole cities. First, it is not a good idea to build houses along lines where two of the earth's plates join together. Second, if you think there may be an earthquake, it is better to build houses on rocks , not on sand. Third, you must make the houses as strong as possible. Weak buildings will fall down in an earthquake, but strong ones may stay up.

Scientists are afraid that one day an even bigger earthquake will hit the part around San Francisco. They call it "The Big One". However, people today are still building more houses. The population in and around San Francisco is now ten times more than it was in 1906. This means that if there is another earthquake, a great many houses and buildings will be destroyed.

Can you make some things that make you think of China. How many can you list? You may say tea, fireworks and so on, but don't forget porcelain.

People always think porcelain is the symbol of China. Even the English word for porcelain is simply " china".

During the Song Dynasty, a town called Changnan (Jindezhen today), in Jiangxi, became known as the "Porcelain City". At the time, people began to take porcelain to Europe along the Silk Road. The European people liked the fine pieces from the mysterious country in the East. They decided to name the works after their place of production--- Changnan, which they pronounced "china".

Chinese porcelain is known as fine art. People describe it as "white as jade(绿玉),thin as paper, bright as a mirror and musical as a bell".

People also draw beautiful pictures, mostly flowers, plants and birds on porcelain. The pictures show different wishes and meanings. For example, peach means long life and dragons and phoenixes may bring good luck.

Today, porcelain is still common in our daily life, you can see it everywhere. And when you are going to choose a perfect wedding gift, there's nothing like a porcelain tea set.
