They crossed in front of me as I was driving out of the store parking lot. I would be delayed for a whole ten seconds. However, I realized that it was an elderly couple. No more anger.

The man leaned on his wife who walked in front of him. He not only used her for support but it was obvious that he was blind. She was his eyes as well. The two of them worked as one --- each needing the other to function(起作用) in this fast-changing world.

That little example of true strength that day changed my whole personal perception of life. Suddenly I wasn't so mad about having to work a few extra hours on Saturday. I had my strength, and I was still relatively young.

That picture of those two elderly people walking with dignity(尊严、自尊) and strength stayed with me the entire week. My life wasn't so bad after all. I had my health and a good job. My wife always gave me good advice whenever I needed it. I started to think --- not only was I lucky to have it all, but so was that wonderful old couple, who, despite the trials and sufferings of a long life, still had the love and support of each other to carry them through this world.

There are so many people out there just like that couple. My wife and I sometimes picture ourselves in our old age, walking arm-in-arm into the sunset. That image always gives us a warm feeling of comfort. Just remember, none of us would be here if it wasn't for our elders. We should spend an extra minute to listen and learn when it comes to helping our elder friends. They need it.

  A) everyone should live with dignity and strength

  B) old people can teach us many important lessons

  C) we should be patient when dealing with old people

Pictures are falling off the walls. Lights are waving. Bed is shaking. Everything is moving. What's going on? It's an earthquake.

Earthquakes are horrible disasters(灾难) and some of them are destructive. The top layer of the earth is made up of huge pieces of rock. They move past each other all the time along fault lines(裂纹线). But sometimes two pieces get stuck together. When they finally move away from each other, they move suddenly. And this makes the land above them shake. This is the most common cause of earthquakes.

During a small earthquake, you will feel a little shaking. But during a strong one, you will be thrown about. A strong earthquake is very horrible. Cracks will appear on the ground and windows and doors will break. Buildings will even fall down. So watch out! If an earthquake happens at sea, it can make big waves called "tsunamis"(海啸). When these waves reach land, they can destroy villages.

Earthquakes are measured on a scale of 0-9. It is called the Richter scale. A size 9 earthquake is the strongest and most dangerous. Since 1900, more than two million people have died in earthquakes. In 1976, a size 7.8 earthquake hit Tangshan, China. It killed more than 240,000 people!

Many earthquakes happened in China, so it is important for us to know what to do when an earthquake hits. Here are some tips on how to stay safe in an earthquake.

  Indoors

◆ Hide under a desk or bed. Stay away from windows and anything that could fall on you.

◆ Do not get into a lift during an earthquake! When an earthquake has ended, stay under the desk until it is really safe to get up.

◆ Open a window and get out of the building quickly if the gas line in your house is broken.

  Outdoors

◆ Move away from buildings and street lights.

◆ Do not run outside if you are in a shop and far from the door.

◆ Make sure you wear shoes after an earthquake. There may be broken glass on the ground.

  93. What will happen when an earthquake happens at sea?

  94. How are earthquakes measured?

  95. Where should we hide when an earthquake happens if we are at home?

  96. We don't need to wear shoes after an earthquake, do we?

  VII. Writing (作文): (共20分)
